Image of an Angel

In the middle of a garden center…

They’re everywhere… During Christmas, you see all kinds of images of them. Glowing ones, imposing ones, little ones and frail-looking ones… I wonder if the real angelic beings smile at that.

I had a friend a few years ago who said he’d seen them in the spiritual realm — and that they were huge and you wouldn’t want to mess with them. Have heard similar stories from others. If you’ve kept up with these entries, you’ve already read about a couple of my angel run-ins… Just remembered another one, too — although this time, I didn’t see them…

A while back, I traveled up to New York City for a weekend Shakespeare workshop in Greenwich Village. In addition to sharpening my acting skills, I had a fun time hanging out with friends and seeing shows. I love NYC! I almost moved there a couple of times, but things never worked out and didn’t have peace about it. So figured at the time that it wasn’t the place for me then. But the times I’ve visited have always been special — including learning how to hail a taxi from a friend who’s now an accomplished actor on stage and screen. But I won’t be a name-dropper. ; )

Anyway. : ) On the way back, at the airport, I sensed something wasn’t right. I got a strange vibe from a group of guys that seemed up to no good. So I struck up a conversation with some other women booked on the same flight. Then I remembered I had to make a call on my cell, so I did what I shouldn’t have. I went to an isolated part of that wing in the airport and sat down in one of the skinny rows of seats and made the call. It was behind a huge partition. There were other passengers back there too, but still…

And then I noticed those guys had followed and sat in my row. I wasn’t afraid. But I was ticked. Then I continued my conversation, keeping my eye on them, and deciding to give them the benefit of the doubt, although that was going against my instincts (never go against your instincts). Now, I could’ve just gone left and only had to pass by one of them. But no. I had to step past four or five. Remember, the row was skinny. As I started walking with my carry-on and purse, they started swinging their feet back and forth. I remember saying, “Excuse me,” and being completely oblivious that they were trying to trip me, until I reached the end.

I’m not naive, but for those few moments, I believe God kept me calm and literally walked me through. You see, I didn’t try not to trip, I just walked. At a regular pace in a skinny space. Their swinging feet never touched me. But at the very end, I felt the pant leg of one brush past me. And that’s when it clicked what they were trying to do. Probably to trip me and then grab my bags and purse.

I remember turning around quickly and glaring at that last guy. And what I saw were dead eyes. I’d never seen lifeless eyes like that before. And full of hate. Literally. He called me a name, of course. And I wish I would’ve said something like, “God bless you” — something like that — to counter it all… But only bad stuff wanted to come out of my mouth then, unfortunately, so I just stayed quiet and went back to my group of fellow travelers, and we were then told to move to another gate, way down from where we were. Another God moment. I’ve prayed for that guy since then and wonder how his life turned out… Hopefully, his life was turned around…

When I got back home, a friend called. She said that she’d been praying for me while I was on my trip. She said she felt God wanted her to pray specifically for angels to surround me… Still gives me goosebumps. If you had been there, you would’ve sworn angels had escorted me through that airport-row gauntlet. No other explanation. I’m a believer…

And it’s fun to remember that God has placed all kinds of angels on this planet to help us. I think most go unnoticed. I think one day, in Heaven, we’ll get to see all the times they intervened on our behalf … and we never knew. Sometimes we get angry at God for what He’s allowed… But I think there’s probably more that He battled behind the scenes that we could ever imagine… I wonder too how many angels we’ve bypassed…

Scripture says some of them take the form of human beings and wander here… I wonder if the homeless guy at the beach or the elderly woman you held the door open for or the young kid in the hospital waiting room was actually an angel in disguise… Anything’s possible… Of course, God also uses human beings who seem like angels… But there are also those heavenly beings… The one standing right beside you now… Look up, and smile. : ) And thank our Father for his many different ways of showing us His Love…
